TIP: iPAQ and Other Pocket PCs
Make the Most of Your Pocket PC –
On and Off the Farm
Pocket PCs (like the iPAQ or Axim) are useful
for much more than field record-keeping, mapping, data logging,
and VRA. Don't overlook the general office and productivity
features offered with your PDA.
-
Carry your contacts list. Use Outlook (bundled free
with most models) or another PIM (Personal Information
Manager) to carry a list of names, addresses, phone
numbers, and notes related to each person or company.
Pocket Informant is a really great PIM that will sync
with Outlook on your desktop computer.
-
Use a to-do or task list. May sound silly to some,
but I find it helpful to jot down to-do's as you think
of them so you don't forget them. Include related notes,
and check them off when completed so you only see a
list of remaining tasks. Tasks not completed will carry
over until you get a chance to finish them.
-
Convert units. Easily convert between units of measure
without carrying a calculator or trying to remember formulas.
-
View reference notes and documents. Using new equipment?
Put any available FAQs or reference manuals on your PDA
for quick answers while you're learning to use it's features.
-
View or enter data in spreadsheets. If you use spreadsheets
for listing or analyzing data, you can put those onto
your Pocket PC for use in the field.
-
View weather forecasts for multiple locations. There
are several options for adding weather information to
your PDA. Sync with online weather sites for current weather
conditions and forecasts for the coming week.
-
Carry your calendar with appointments and reminder alarms.
Set audio and screen alarms to remind you of appointments,
tasks, or even medicine schedules.
Of course, Pocket PCs are also great for farm-specific applications
with Trac Mate, Site Mate, Stock Mate, and Guide Mate, including:
-
Field mapping
-
Field record-keeping
-
Scouting for weed and insect pressures
-
Sampling soil data
-
Logging data from controllers (like yield or veris data)
-
Variable rate application, including use of prescriptions
created by crop consultants and seed companies
-
Livestock management
