TIP: iPAQ and Other Pocket PCs
Essential Pocket PC Tips
Conserve System RAM by
Installing Programs on PC Card
You can improve performance by installing most applications
on the storage card instead of in main memory. Trac Mate is
the only Farm Works Software that will not install to a card.
When you are installing an application, the installation
manager will ask at one point whether you want to install
the program in the default folder. Click No. After a pause,
a dialog box will come up that gives you the choice of Main
Memory or Storage Card. Choose Storage Card,
and the application will be installed on your card. The benefit
is that system RAM will not be used up in storing the application
files and can be used instead to run applications.
Save RAM by Moving My Documents
Folder to a PC Card
If you have an external storage card or drive, you can organize
your My Documents folder(s) to make finding things easier
and to free up your internal memory for running applications.
In the root of your storage card or drive, create a "My
Documents" folder. Create handy subfolders within it
to organize your materials by file type or other logical groupings.
I use "Audio" (music, sound files), "Images"
(pictures, images, graphic files), "Reference" (notes,
ref docs, etc, in subdirectories by topic), "Maps",
"Routes" (for trip navigation maps and routes),
"Farm" (for farm-related documents, spreadsheets,
etc), and "Clients" (with directories by client
name).
ANY application (from MS Reader to Windows Media Player)
that looks for files will find ANY files in main memory AND
the storage card or drive as long as they are in a My Documents
folder or its subfolders. You can move ALL the files from
the My Documents in the main memory to the My Documents folder(s)
on your storage media, freeing up megabytes of system RAM.
Use Your Hotkeys on Front of
the iPAQ
The "hotkeys" on front of your Pocket PC are a
great way to quickly start your favorite applications. By
default, the buttons launch Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, and
the iTask Menu, but you can change those to lauch whatever
you'd like. Simply select Start, Settings, Personal tab, then
open the Buttons utility. Choose a new program to assign to
a button by clicking on the drop-down list for Button Assignment.
For example, if you don't use the inbox (email) on your iPAQ,
change the inbox button assignment to Trac Mate or Site Mate.
Did you know that some of these buttons have multiple functions?
If you press the Calendar button once it brings up your calendar.
Press it again and it toggles to a different view of the calendar.
On each press it toggles between the different calendar views.
If you press and hold the Calendar button it opens the new
appointment screen.
The Address Book button is similar. Press once to open the
Address Book. Press again to toggle through your first seven
address categories and then the most recently opened entries.
If you press and hold the Address Book button it opens the
New Contact screen.
The Inbox button just opens the inbox and has no extra functions
if pressed repeatedly or held.
The iTask button obviously opens the iTask task switcher
when pressed. By the way, you can scroll through the iTask
list using the Navigation Button and you can select the application
you wish to switch to by pressing the Navigation Button. Press
and hold the iTask button to toggle through the open applications,
like with Alt-Tab on a desktop machine.
Change Programs on Your Start
Menu
It's easy to add or remove programs listed in the Start Menu.
Choose Start, Settings, Personal tab, then open Menus utility.
Click to select the programs you want displayed when you open
he Start Menu. You're limited to nine, so choose those you
use most often or which are hard to remember how to get to
otherwise.
